On Saturday 27th September 14 Anti-Bullying Ambassadors from across England came together at Facebook's Headquarters in London for their first ever Youth Board meeting. Mabel and Lydia, our Youth Board Bloggers will tell you what they got up to. Over to you two!
Mabel: We all started the day very early on Saturday most of us were excited, some of us were nervous and anxious but still ready for the trip to Facebook Headquarters in London. Taking the tube across different parts of England we were all on our way!!
After we arrived at Facebook we were taken into the meeting room where we had to find our names on our new ABA hoodies and t-shirts. Jack Gregory a previous Youth Board member also attended the meeting. He talked about his experience on the Youth Board and what he has achieved since, it was interesting to hear and made us excited about the year ahead. We started off doing an ‘Ice-Breaker’ activity where we turned to the person to our right and drew them on balloons whilst we did a short Q&A session with them. We found out weird and cool things about each other including Laura's love of YouTube videos and Lydia's fear of toasters! We next did a difficult challenge where we split into three groups and had to use newspaper to build a tower to balance a crème egg on. First my group had some difficulties but we got our minds together and made it balance. Sadly my group didn't win but it was lots of fun!
Lydia: After lunch we were full of energy and ready for our next activity which was a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style exercise. We worked in groups to come up with the most imaginative and creative way to promote Anti-Bullying Week 2014. This year’s theme is ‘Let’s stop bullying for all’ and all three teams worked hard to impress the dragons. The winning team designed an app aimed at young people which included a game, an iTunes library full of feel-good songs and an online chat where you can chat to an Anti-Bullying Ambassador if you are being bullied.
We also showcased our own Anti Bullying work to each other by sharing what we had done for the summer challenge ‘get your community to take a stand against bullying’. Daniel came up with the brilliant idea of making and giving out stickers in his school and community which say ‘Sticker with Us and Say No to Bullying!’ We were all really impressed with this simple but effective idea and we all had a sticker! Other ideas included Chloe’s poster to show that difference is cool, Sam’s video with statistics on bullying, my video which had pictures of people holding up a ‘taking a stand against bullying’ sign, Inayah’s professional PowerPoint presentation and Ethan’s video blog.
The elections for Chairperson and Vice Chairperson took place, we all did our speeches and then we had to vote for our favourite. The elected youth board members were Kyra as Chairperson and Lewis as Vice Chairperson! Myself and Mabel were chosen to be the Youth Board Bloggers.
Overall, the day was great. We all made friends with each other and had a lovely time at Facebook HQ. We can’t wait to attend the Anti-Bullying Week Events in November!
